iPhone 4 jailbroken, Now What? Enjoy FaceTime Over 3G Network

Thanks to My3G, with which now you can bring face-to-face video chat to the 3G network for newly jailbroken iPhone 4 users. Earlier, FaceTime, Apple’s video chat app released for use with the iPhone 4, has been restricted to use over wifi connections.

Last week only, the Library of Congress added new exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), exempting “jailbreaking” devices as “fair use”. A jailbroken device can install and run apps not approved by Apple or offered in Apple’s App Store. Apple has said that jailbreaking its devices will void the warranty, but the process is easily reversed with a device restore.

However, this US$3.99 solution is not limited to FaceTime. My3G enables most Wi-Fi limited applications to provide connectivity over 3G networks when Wi-Fi connections are not available. Supported apps include YouTube, Skype, and Fring, among others and it also offers a free 10 days trial for anyone who wants to give it a try.

To use it, you must jailbreak and then download the software from either the Cydia or Rock stores. The download is free but you must register the software to keep using it after the trial period. Place your purchase either from the RockYourPhone.com website or from in-app in the Rock app.
